Planner and Links

Righto troops...there is a lot to read here...take your time... it is all you'll need for the next couple of days. If you don't understand...ask.  You'll need to show perseverance, motivation and inspiration this week.

Planning

I have included a blank planner. Make your own copy, post it to your writing folder (even though it will include maths, and topic-its got to go somewhere!). Make sure that what ever you decide to work on, document it. Write down what it is (oral language, writing, reading, maths, etc...) and decide what it is you are learning, or wanting to learning (which becomes your W.A.L.T) and write that down as well. When i get back, we'll talk about what worked well and what didn't. Don't worry about making mistakes!

Planner link

Literacy

If you go to the Something to Say blog you'll find all the literacy links you'll need for the next couple of days for reading/writing and oral language. Because I am so nice I am giving you options. You can pick and choose what you'd like to do, but you must plan. Also...if you feel like blogging, blog! Don't forget that you don't always have to blog on your own blog...how about commenting on someone else's? For example, check out this moment in time from Hannah's blog. What a great visual, and in only 3 sentences! Have a go yourself!

Wondering what a piece of writing is supposed to include? Use this link to the Structure and Language notes. Its a bit 'Teachery',(made up word alert!) but it may be useful.

Argument writing GUILTY or INNOCENT? This is going to become a speech (or at least a practice one). I have included lots of links, rubrics and a SOLO marking guide. Use them!

The Literacy Shed. An amazing website with lots of ideas to inspire. Most of these are short videos. You may find something exciting to write about.  My favourite...

Memory The other day we began a small peiece of writing about a memory. You could continue on with that. He is a link to a sightly different piece.

50 word story. There is no SOLO rubric for this one. Your WALTS would be the ideas in the bullet points for this activity.

Absolute nonsense

Maths

You are already very successful at this, in filling in your own 'gaps' and working forward. I have stop giving you tasks because you are doing it for yourselves. Please continue. Don't forget that 1 1/2 hrs is a long time to be hunched over a laptop working. Have a 5 min break and refresh. Plan what you are doing and post evidence to your drive.

Genius Hour

On Monday, Tuesday and Thursday afternoon you can begin your genius hour presentations. Last term you filled in a form that told me what you wanted to do. Have another look at it. Decide on a topic (or someone else's) and go for it. It needs to be 'gutsy'. I don't want a bunch of presentations with pictures of your favourite team and a list of boring facts.. (snoozefest!). This is your chance to do a 'project' on something you've always wanted to do. It needs to excite you. These are individual works-please don't work with anyone else.

NO KAEDYN, NO!

Over the last couple of days, we have been throwing together our 'turn-a-book-into-a-movie' movie. Its very "loosely" based on 'No David!', by David Shannon.

It was a lot of fun to make and considering that that Kaedyn didn't really want to do it, it think he did amazingly.

Thanks a lot to Room 15 who helped out with the "NO, KAEDYN's".

Thanks also to Kaedyn's 'stunt double' Libby and to everyone else that helped us put the movie together.

Wednesday's Programme

Hi everyone,

Cherie's Mum has been taken ill (and as yet I will still be here tomorrow), but if anything should happen I may need to go to Nelson and therefore not be in class for a couple of days. If that's the case then I will detail here the plan for the next couple of days just in case. I may not need to go to Nelson, but here is the plan anyway

Yesterday, while many were out of the class for League and Arts talented, we trialed letting everyone plan out their day. Its something we may continue to do, but for tomorrow (if I am not there we'll just stick to the normal routine.

Here is a link to the planner

When writing your arguments, make sure you use the "Something to Say" blog link on the side it has your SOLO rubric of what you need to achieve and what the structure and language of an argument should look like. It has lots of other useful planning links on it as well.

Don't forget early lunch tomorrow because of Tech.

If i need to i will make new posts each day to detail your work. MAKE SURE YOU SIGN INTO CHROME AS WELL. That way i can help you if i need to (and spy on you off course!)

Science Projects

WALT: plan and carry out a scientific experiment.

Success Criteria: SOLO Rubric
  1. Analyse whether out experiment was a fair test
  2. Analyse whether our findings were reliable and valid
Last term we started our science project investigations. This term we are going to carry these out and write them up. These experiments need to be completed in one day, so you'll need to be all prepared and ready to go THIS FRIDAY.

All that needs to be completed before then is the 'recipe' (the question, list of materials and procedure)

Here are two photos that may help. The first photo explains what need to be included, and the other demonstrates the standard of presentation.

Make sure you figure out how you are going to measure your results

Figurative Language/Poetry activity

Printmaking

WALT: make a multicoloured block print.

Two weeks ago we made some simple black block prints using polystyrene as our block. They were a bit small and fiddly but some worked out OK. It was just a practice run anyway.

Hannah's...

We may leave them like this or we may colour them by hand. Whatever we decide is fine because the cool thing about these types of print is that you can print them over and over again...

...the next one we are going to do however is not so easy...

...once we have got to the end, the block CANNOT be reused. You will see why..

Step1: the plan

Step 1. Plan out your work including the colours you are going to use.

Step 2: Add your design to the block. Note that the lines are thick. I used the wider part of the vivid. You'll see why soon.
Note the thick lines
The colour's names added for when it gets confusing

Step 3: Begin the cutting/'carving' process. In order to get nice crisp lines we use a craft knife. The secret here is to go slowly, keeping the knife blade low so you don't tear the polystyrene. You want to cut it like butter. Make sure the blade is sharp.
Cutting either side of the thick lines

One the photo on the left you will notice the thick lines that I mentioned earlier. Because you want these in your detail you need to cut either side of them. Thin lines will be a nightmare to cut either side of.

If you look close enough in this photo, you will see all of the lines have been cut around...now for the fun part...the 'carving'
Step 4: 'Carving'.
Because the polystyrene is soft we can push it down rather than carve it out (like we would normally do if we were using a wood block or piece of lino). That's why we cut around the design and that's why we get nice crisp edges to our design (I wonder who the clever person was that came up with this idea...)

Beginning to 'Carve' These bits will stay white
Note the crisp edges where the design has been cut
Step 5: First ink
Ink up the block and get a good coating across the entire block. Not too much, and don't rub it out either. You may need a practice print to see. Make sure your first colour is the lightest. You are going to layer the colours over each other as you go. it is a lot easier to cover black over yellow, rather than the other way around. If you have colours that are similar is their deepness, you may want to think about changing them. You want a contrast.
Yellow is the first ink. You work from lightest to darkest
A good covering of ink. The bits pushed down will always be white

First layer.

Flanny Jnr. printing. Note that we did it on carpet. it helps get a nice press.

This weeks Reading/Science work requires you to read and problem solve. The images are of leaves from five different types of beech tree. A key needs to be used to identify which type of beech tree each leaf comes from. Good luck.

There were a few "issues" around the images on the .doc last week. Don't forget there are MANY ways to skin a cat and you should all be able to problem solve it out if it happens for you again. Printing it off  'old-school' style is always do-able. There shouldn't be any excuses...

50 Word Story Challenge

WALT: write a very, very, very short story!

This was a lot of fun! It took a lot longer than most expected to get 'right'. The goal was to write a complete story in 50 words (not including title-which could also be used to extend the story). We had to do a lot of re-crafting, as every word that to pull it's weight and not be wasted. Here are a couple...more to be added!

THE END

I saw it.Rubble fracturing like glass, turning countryside and cities into a continent of debris. The world, a dimension of blackness. Torsos, separated from their bodies, lay lifeless. A dark god is having fun.

Absolute Nonsense!

Yesterday we looked at nonsense writing. The idea was to avoid the "Common Sense Policeman" and just let ideas and scenarios fall out of our heads. I think It was a very successful exercise. Many of these pieces of writing had a strange dream-like feeling. Enjoy.

The adventures of the fat flying whale (a nonsense story) By Skye

Once upon a time a long time ago, someone batted a whale and then the whale flew into a  basketball. The basketball hit Princess Rebuska in the head then she died. Then her cow finally got to wear her bra and knickers for the first time waddling down the road singing “It’s worth it by Jackie Thomas. The next day she woke up on the moon on a floating cow that was jumping into a bowl of crushed up aliens that was slowly being run over by a bulldozer on its way tot Pluto to deliver some kindly donated pizza from the sun. The pizza blew up then and this stupid story came to an end.

There once was a boy called Bob. He cut sausages into giraffes. Then the hippos all laughed and said, “You are crazy”. Everyone knows hippos make better patties.
